Lacrosse is a dynamic and fast-paced sport that requires high levels of skill and athleticism. Millions of players have entered the amateur ranks with aspirations of making their way to the professional ranks at some point in their careers, but only the cream of the crop are able to make the cut. Here is a breakdown of the skills, strengths and specific gear that a person needs in order to become an excellent lacrosse player:
Body Type
If one were to design the perfect lacrosse player from scratch in a laboratory, they would be wise to start with a sturdy frame, including long powerful legs and a set of broad shoulders. Size is not necessarily required for a person to be a great lacrosse player, but a wide upper body and fast-pumping legs create the perfect combination of fleet feet and swift throwing and passing motions.
The player also needs to be very agile, flexible, and tough. Many spectators often get caught up in the speed and finesse of lacrosse, but the guys on the field are every bit as athletic and physically capable as professionals in other popular sports. Finding the peak of their skills and then honing those over time is what the truly great lacrosse players are able to do, and toughness is simply something that is built from within over time. If a player is not able to ignore pain and shake off minor injuries for the greater good of the team, then they will not be able to reach the higher echelons of the sport.
Mental Prowess
Along with a strong set of physical skills, a deep reservoir of mental strength is also a requirement when designing the perfect lacrosse player. A keen awareness of one’s surroundings and the ability to make split-second, well-calculated decisions is a must. Many of the top-flight lacrosse players in North America follow a strict regimen of diet and exercise that is meticulously designed to allow them to get the absolute most out of their body and their minds during the long and demanding games.
Gear
Lastly, the perfect lacrosse player should always be decked out in the very best lacrosse gear that can be found, including helmets, uniforms and heads for lacrosse sticks. Many successful athletes subscribe to the notion that if you look great you feel great, and if you feel great you put yourself in a position to doing great things on the field.
Lacrosse is a tough sport that often goes without the attention it deserves. Not just anyone can play, and only those with great endurance with prevail. So if you are interested in lacrosse, consider the aforementioned and then consider whether or not you have what it take to succeed in lacrosse.
