My Visit on the Set of the Hilarious Comedy ‘black-ish
I’m sure you’ve already read about me and the other bloggers visiting with Tracee Ellis Ross on the set of ‘black-ish a few weeks ago. It was just one of the great highlights of my recent Disney press trip. While we visited with Tracee she walked us through the Johnson’s home (family on ‘black-ish).
‘black-ish is a hilarious comedy following the lives of the Johnson family. On the show you’ll meet Andre ‘Dre’ Johnson (Anthony Anderson), his beautiful wife Rainbow Johnson, (Tracee Ellis Ross) and four kids (Marcus Scribner, Miles Brown, Yara Shahidi and Marsai Martin). Family man, Dre, struggles to gain a sense of cultural identity while he raises his kids in a predominantly white, upper-middle-class neighborhood.
One thing I first noticed while walking through the Johnson home was the size. It is so big! I remember vising the set of The Middle last year and it was so small compared to this set. The Johnson home is absolutely beautiful too! It is amazing all of the details that go into the decorating of sets.
Most sets have open walls because they are shot multi-cam but the ‘black-ish set is big enough they can shoot from one side of a room or through a doorway. It really is a large home on set.
One secret on sets is that they are normally one level. So, the stairs you see in the picture below actually go nowhere! All the rooms are on the same level.
And what you see through the windows are actually paintings made to look like the outdoors! Of course, they will shoot scenes outdoors if need be but nearly everything is shot on set. The outdoor patio is actually real but it’s indoors with fake trees and a fake outdoor backdrop.
Sets pay attention to every detail. From family photos to mail addresses. Most items on the set are from actual stores you and I shop at – think Target.
They have an incredible costume designer, led by Michelle Cole. Dre has an amazing closet. So many shoes!
Tune in tonight for the Stuff episode of ‘black-ish on ABC 9:30/8:30c
Dre thinks Christmas has become commercialized is too much about all the stuff. No one loves stuff more than Dre’s kids. Pops (Laurence Fishburne) and Ruby (Jenifer Lewis) try to show the kids the true meaning of Christmas by paring down gifts and spending more time together, and Daphne Lido (Wanda Sykes) invites herself over to celebrate with the Johnson family.
The kids are less than thrilled with the news and hope if they are on their best behavior Dre and Bow will cave in. Meanwhile, Daphne Lido , who is single for her first holiday alone, invites herself to the Johnson family home to celebrate with them.
‘black-ish stars Anthony Anderson as Andre “Dre” Johnson, Tracee Ellis Ross as Rainbow Johnson, Yara Shahidi as Zoey Johnson, Marcus Scribner as Andre Johnson, Jr., Miles Brown as Jack Johnson, Marsai Martin as Diane Johnson and Laurence Fishburne as Pops.

Hi–I’m wondering if you know where the pillows from the patio on the Black-ish set are from. In particular, I’m trying to find the bolster shaped one with the leaf pattern and can’t figure out where to get it. Thanks!
Amy, I’m not sure but I can sure find out for you 🙂
