See the music. Hear the dance. This is exactly what the new movie, High Strung, makes you see and hear… and this one does not disappoint!
I love watching movies about music and dance. I danced when I was very little through high school. I loved it. It makes me appreciate the arts and the amazing talent behind creating these movies.
Keenan Kampa plays a dancer, Ruby Adams, from the Midwest. Keenan is an accomplished ballerina and recently danced in the Mariinsky Ballet in Russia before coming back to the US. In High Strung she is vulnerable and real. Ballet is such an amazing art. Her character comes to New York City on a dance scholarship.
Nicholas Galitzine, known as Johnnie Blackwell in the movie, plays a British musician (violinist) that starts by playing for money in the subway tunnels. His world is much different from Kampa’s character. Her world is classical and disciplined while Johnnie’s is much more improvisational and street smart. So what happens when their two worlds meet?
A hip-hop battle gone wrong brings these two artists together in an unusual way. They immediately class but you soon see the chemistry they have and the sparks begin to fly. High Strung is a non-typical romantic dance movie. The two start competing in New York City and quickly have their own struggles.
Ruby must save her scholarship while Johnnie is threatened of being deported. It’s love but also a dramatic story watching as the two compete to save their lives from changing. They have the help of the dance crew called The SwitchSteps to help save Ruby’s scholarship and Johnnie’s world from changing.
The dancing will have you on the edge of your seat when they combine cutting edge hip-hop with contemporary and classic dance. The competition will change their lives forever whether they win or lose.
In my opinion, this is one of the best dance movies I’ve ever seen! Head out to the theaters this weekend and let me know what you think! Check out the trailer below:
