Everything You Need to Know About Building a Patio
Having a patio is beneficial for lots of reasons. Not only is it a perfect place to entertain, it can be a great place to chill on your own too. Whether you want to just reflect or read a great book, your patio can be the perfect partner. There are a couple of things you should be aware of before you decide to add a patio though. Here’s everything you need to know:
It Needs to Suit Your Family
How do you think your family will use the patio? Your family’s needs should be thought of before anything else. Lots of things will make a difference to how you design your patio. Using it for cooking, for instance, will mean you’d need to design it differently to if you weren’t going to cook there.
Easy Access is Important
There’s no point in having a patio if it isn’t easy to access. Easy access is very important. Everybody should be able to get the patio easily and safely. Make sure nothing obstructs the way.
Pick Lounge Furniture
Comfort in a patio is an important element too. Lounge furniture that everybody can relax on is the best type of furniture to choose. It should be good for both dining and lounging.
Have The Patio Close to the Kitchen
Having the patio close to the kitchen is the best bet. You’ll find it easier to serve food to your guests this way, and be able to tidy up efficiently.
Make Sure It’s the Right Size
The size of your patio will depend on a few things. The size of your garden and how you’ll use your patio being the most important. You may want to include an outdoor kitchen, a spa, or even a hot tub. All of these things will contribute to the size you need your patio to be.
Easy Maintenance
Easy to maintain patios are the best kind of patios. Your material should be one that’s easy to clean and that can resist food/drink spills. You may need to treat your patio regularly with a sealant to protect it from the elements. Even natural materials need to be looked after.
Giving Shelter
Your patio should give shelter for it to be effective. It should be able to protect you from the rain, wind, snow, and more. You can even add patio heaters if you think you’ll use it all year round, say Patio Living Perth. This will help you to make the most of your patio no matter what time of year it is.
Lighting
To get the most from your patio you need lighting. You could fix this to the wall or have it overhead if your patio has a roof.
Now you know everything there is to know, you can go ahead with planning and building your patio. A patio is a great way to get the most out of your garden, so don’t hesitate to build one if you have the budget and room for it!

These are some great things to consider when putting in a patio. Thank you so much for sharing
Good tops. I especially like the “be close to the kitchen”. How true is that. No one wants people tracking through the entire house to get food/drinks.
Love the tips!! Great ideals!
Great ideas and tips! Yeah, it is very frustrating with they trample through the house to get to the kitchen!! 🙂
Great informative post and fun to read while it is freezing and crappy out. I’m dreaming of summer already. We already have a fairly new deck and it is an extension of our living space, weather permitting. I love the picture of the blue deck, I just gave some old wood patio furniture a new coat of paint this past summer and that is very close to that color.
Where were you when we had our patio deck built…the builder followed maybe one of your great suggestions and boy do we regret it now…especially after reading your instructions.
Having a nice patio and yard is a dream come true for me. I love a nice garden and flower bed too.
We are thinking about adding a patio to our backyard this spring. My husband only wants to talk about the design and I can only think about what I want on the patio.
OMG what a surprise it was to see your article about redoing a patio…..last summer ended in me basically “tearing apart” the old patio, taking apart the brick “homemade poorly” bar-b-que…lol, and tossing the old broken patio furniture….so, as of spring, I plan to build a new patio…..thanks for the great tips…and I love the blue paint on the deck.
My question is: What patio materials are easiest to clean?
Thanks for all the amazing tips. We will be redoing our patio this year and in glad I read this.
My dream, a patio/porch to enjoy the fabulous San Diego weather. Patience, all in good time.
