Do you enjoy having guests over on race day? If you do then I’m sure you enjoy decorating for any big race day party. I love to create signs for events or to have in my home year round. You can easily learn how to make your own barn wood race day sign.
I live on a farm so barn wood is a plenty but when I was in Walmart the other day I found a very nice blank wood sign that I thought would work perfectly. I didn’t have time to cut my own wood and this was the perfect size. So, it’s new but still looks very much like barn wood.
While I made that pit-stop by Walmart I made sure to get some of the new fast acting, rapid release formula Advil® Film-Coated. I have a bad back so I definitely wanted to help with any aches and pains on race day so I could enjoy the race with our friends and family. It goes to work in minutes on tough pain* especially when it comes to my back pain. Not only is it great for my back pain but also used for headaches, muscle aches, toothaches, menstrual cramps, and aches and pains associated with the common cold.
One of the great things about this tutorial is that you can create a sign for race day or anything else your heart desires. Have a favorite quote? Paint it on the sign. Or, if you’ve got an artistic side you can paint a picture. It’s really wide open to your imagination.
Barn wood Race Day Sign
Supplies
- wood
- sandpaper (I use 100 grit)
- saw (if you need to cut your wood)
- paint (use paint markers
or paint with a paint brush)
- sealant (only if placing the sign outdoors)
- stencils (print your own or get them here

)Instructions
Determine the size of wood you would like to use. If you have a long quote you will need a larger size or if you’d like large letters.
If you’d like the wood painted you need to do that first. I painted mine and then used sandpaper to distress the paint to make it look a bit more rustic.
Next, determine if you will be freestyle painting the letters or using stencils. You can easily print off stencils with your home printer.
Create and print the letters in the size you would like to use on your sign. Be sure to measure your letters and words to be sure they will fit.
Next, use chalk or pencil to shade on the backside of your paper where your letters are outlined. Once you’ve done this place the paper down on your wood (chalk or pencil shading down) and trace the outlines of your letters. An outline of pencil or chalk will be left on the wood for you to paint your letters.
Okay, I seriously needed an Advil® Film-Coated after shading the back of my letters. Plus, it didn’t end up working as nicely as I thought so I took a permanent marker to trace around the letters and the marker ink bled through so that was a major win. I’ll use that method again if I’m painting my letters black.
Now you can remove your stencils and fill in your letters. I ended up using a Sharpie paint marker and didn’t quite fill in all the wood to make the letters look distressed. You could also use the sand paper to make more of a distressed look if you like by sanding the paint.
If you would prefer, you can use chalk or regular paint and a paint brush to fill in your letters.
Allow to dry and seal your sign with a weather proofing sealant if you plan to hang it outdoors.
Hang your sign!
