My son struggled with reading in first grade. We read every night. He worked hard at school and I felt like we weren’t gaining progress. In second grade he made huge improvements and now in third grade he reads on his own every night because he can’t wait to finish his book. Of course, I still read to him but it was all the practice and encouragement that has made him a successful reader.
