Deric McCabe on Oprah Eating His Popcorn & More in A Wrinkle in Time

Deric McCabe interview

During my recent partnership with Disney we also learned more about the DVD/Blu-ray release of A Wrinkle in Time. To learn more about the movie and bonus features we interviewed the charming nine-year-old Deric McCabe who plays Charles Wallace Murry. While waiting on everyone to get to the interview Deric showed off his dance moves! There was not a dull moment when interviewing this kid! He kept us on our feet quickly pointing to the next person to ask their question.

Deric has an amazing personality and when we told him that he said he already knew it! Definitely a confident kid which I’m sure you need in the business. All of us interviewing instantly fell in love with him. He is definitely going to do great things!

Deric was actually called in to do his first audition. After his initial meeting with the creators he was called in to act in a different scene for them. He said he was super nervous and it was a very long process.

Deric loved when they were on location in New Zealand. The surroundings made it easier for him to get into character which came pretty easy to him.

Although many actors are homeschooled, Deric actually goes to a regular school. His friends were so excited to ask him questions about the filming of the movie. He said he told them everything!

Scarlett Johansson

Deric has a two-year-old baby brother whom he tells the Hulk is bad. Apparently Deric’s reasoning for this is because he has a crush on Scarlett Johansson and in her recent movie, Avengers: Infinity War, Hulk is also a recent. Deric said he constantly told his brother that Scarlett is good and Hulk is bad. Deric also has a twelve-year-old sister who he said is pretty nice.

Deric’s favorite actors are Scarlett Johansson, of course, and Chloe Bennet because they are delightful. Deric went on to say that he loves them because they are hot. Haha!

Deric would love to work with Scarlett Johansson one day especially since she’s a superhero. Deric wants to be a superhero and would love to be a part of the Avengers.

A Learning Experience

When we asked Deric learned when making the movie he responded quickly that he learned the place where they keep the snacks. He loved the candy and popcorn maker. He loved how they made the popcorn with butter and cheddar atop.

During one scene Deric had to sit his popcorn down to practice a stunt in the cave. Oprah was waiting her turn and started eating his popcorn. That was the first time Deric met Oprah. He said Oprah was asking who’s popcorn it was and it was so delicious. He couldn’t believe Oprah was eating his popcorn.

After filming Deric was sobbing on the floor and Oprah said, “there’s more to come after the movie.” Deric replied, “no there’s not! My life is over!” I am sure Oprah was right!

Mindy and Reese were a lot of fun to work with on set. Mindy’s character is always speaking in quotes but Deric said they had some good conversations. Reese gave Deric lots of hugs and talked with him a lot which he loved.

Favorite and Hardest Scenes

One of Deric’s favorite parts of filming was the hallway scene. The stunt men had to pull them up and they couldn’t see because they couldn’t be in the shot. Deric said he stopped but the stunt men kept going and Deric fell on top of all three of them. It’s actually a special bonus on the DVD!

The hardest scene for Deric to film was the last scene where they’re in the brain. He said it was really disgusting and sticky. He had to cry which was really hard for him. To cry Deric would think about his baby brother being hurt or injured.

Towards the end of our interview Deric was determined to show us his cartwheel. The energetic nine-year-old did just that! He did cartwheel after cartwheel in the front of the theater as we cheered him on!
