Try these 10 DIY carpet cleaning secrets and tips to keep your home in top shape. Regular carpet cleaning not only means cleaner carpets, but can also contribute to a healthier home environment. Did you know the Norwark virus or Norovirus (the virus that causes the – stomach flu) can survive on an uncleaned carpet for a month or more?
Tip 1 – Furniture
Remove the furniture from the carpeted area before cleaning. It the furniture is too heavy, place a plastic film under and around legs of the furniture. Wait until carpet dries before replacing the furniture or walking on the carpet.
Tip 2 – Vacuuming
Vacuum thoroughly. Carpets need to be vacuumed once a week and more often in areas that are prone to dirt. I vacuum our carpets every day. This can have the biggest impact on the whole process!
Tip 3 – Cleaning Solution
Always remember to test any cleaning products on a small area first. Do not add other chemicals or under-dilute in an attempt to make your cleaner stronger. Only use a Seal of Approval cleaning solution that works with your extractor. Do not use excessive amount of detergents for carpet cleaning.
Tip 4 – Cleaning Style
Begin at the farthest point from the doorway and work back toward it so you can step out when done. Do not clean yourself in a corner!
Tip 5 – Water on Carpet
Be patient and do not over-wet the carpet. Extract as much of the water as possible.
Tip 6 – Drying Carpet
Ventilate the area and open windows if outdoor weather conditions permit. Never close up a room with a wet carpet. You want the fastest drying-time possible to prevent mold growth and to allow earlier use. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system should be switched to the “on” position until the carpet is completely dry.
Tip 7 – Stain Removal
To remove a stain, simply blot the spot and dry. Always blot it from the outside in direction. Rinse thoroughly with clean water, and then blot again. Never scrub the carpet, or you risk ruining the carpet fibers or letting the spill soak through to the carpet pad. Use a hard bristled brush with a solution of water, and carpet shampoo to scrub stains. I use our favorite long lasting and reusable cleaning cloths.
Tip 8 – Carpet Cleaning Methods
There are five methods of recognized carpet cleaning, but only three are suitable for consumer use.
- Hot water extraction
- Dry powder cleaning
- Dry foam
Tip 9 – Cleaning Machine
If you have a lot of carpet, cleaning it using a machine, rather than doing it by hand, will get the job done faster. If you have very high quality carpet, call in a professional carpet cleaner every 2-3 years for a really thorough job.
Tip 10 – Train Pets
Properly train your pets. Make sure your cat, dog, or other small animal does not have any “accidents” on your carpet. Plus, don’t let the cat’s litter box rule your life.
