THE CRAWFORD HOTEL – Denver Union Station REVIEW
Website: http://thecrawfordhotel.com
Before our stay, my boyfriend, doggy and I began our drive from Kansas City, MO. With our rental car packed (and I do mean packed) we drove across the flat plains of Kansas throughout the night. By the time we arrived in Denver it was nearing 8AM and we were exhausted, but the breathtaking mountains reinvigorated us – we were almost there!
Thankfully, there were many parking options within the LoDo District, making our walk to the hotel very quick. We chose a garage that’s only 2 blocks away ($8 per 24 hours), and as we approached our hotel we were overwhelmed with a historic building that read ‘Union Station’.
Duke, my dog, tugged at his leash and jolted around the open walkway. Residents and guests alike were walking their furry friends on the open concrete, filled with trees – Duke felt right at home!
The doorman greeted us as we entered the historic building. I gazed overhead to see 4 floors surrounding us with an open ceiling. We learned that this is called The Great Hall – elevated 65-feet above us. There were about a dozen boutiques and restaurants connected to the lobby – The Kitchen Next Door, Snooze, Stoic & Genuine, Milkbox Ice Creamery and The Terminal Bar just to name a few.
Front desk associates quickly welcomed us with smiles and one lady even gave Duke several treats and ear scratches! They gave us a nice rundown of the area and the building itself, also suggesting their favorite restaurants. Once we were checked in, the key was ours and we were off to relax – finally!
As we exited the elevator onto our 4th floor rustic hallway we took a moment to glance down into the lobby. It was gorgeous.
Our hotel room was to be a ‘Deluxe Classic Double’. Once we opened the robust wooden door to our room we stepped up the stairs into our glaring circle chandelier filled dining area. It was perfect and serene – I felt relaxed immediately. Meanwhile, Duke went straight for his perfectly placed porcelain doggy bowls – his very favorite treats were sitting inside! If any of you dog owners out there are familiar with Greenies you know just what I am talking about!
We then noticed a lovely note – welcoming us to the hotel. Nearby, there were black and white truffle chocolates on the kitchenette (they were eaten in about 2.2 seconds) and not one, but two 46-inch flat screen HD TVs (mounted on the dining room wall and placed on the bedroom dresser). The bedroom was settled a few steps down from the kitchenette, with a pair of slippers placed onto a matt next to each plush Queen bed and an iPad mini situated in between, featuring The Crawford Hotel app. I dove onto the duvet and exploded into heaven!
To my amazement, Duke was on his own plush bed as well! It was actually nicer and larger than the bed he has at home, so he felt like a king I am sure.
Now, for one of my favorite parts of the hotel – the bathroom.
Another wooden door lead us into an oversized bathroom with a huge wooden post accent shaped as a V (alongside the wall). Two cozy robes stared at me from the wall, hung with The Crawford Hotel embroidery.
The shower was to die for. There were 2 shower heads, one that was more standard and the other was large and cascading. There were mint shampoo, conditioner and body wash offerings, along with C.O. Bigelow lavender peppermint body lotion (that I am still using days afterward).
Before we took a nap, we ordered room service from Snooze, Denver’s famous “A.M. Eatery”. The service was prompt and hot and, well, absolutely delicious! We ordered the following (and I suggest doing the same):
Snooze Breakfast Burrito
Burrito Filled with scrambled eggs, hash browns, house black beans, cheddar & jack cheese, topped with pico de gallo and choice of green chili or ranchero (psst, love your veggies & meats)
Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes
Buttermilk pancakes with caramelized pineapple chunks, housemade vanilla crème anglaise and cinnamon butter
After a nap we wandered down into the lobby for some tea and coffee from the Pigtrain Coffee Co. We walked and then drove around Denver for a bit – exploring downtown. The city is so special and I highly recommend everyone take a week to explore there. Everyone is very pleasant and speaks very highly of their city. Being next to all of those mountains seems to do the body and mind good!
Meanwhile, my boyfriend was able to score some third row tickets to the Colorado Avalanche hockey game, so we were off to the Pepsi Center! Unfortunately, the Avalanche lost to Anaheim, but we had a blast exploring the center, grabbing snacks and coming very close to getting hit in the head with a wild puck! All the while I was completely content as I was sure my dog, Duke, was safe and sound enjoying his pet-friendly stay.
Afterwards, we took a nice walk back to Union Station’s Stoic & Genuine seafood restaurant. We opted to sit at the bar and sip a cocktail and craft beer. My boyfriend and I ordered the following:
Fried Oyster Sandwich
Smoked oyster aioli, potato bun, lettuce, pickle
12.50
Lobster Roll
Damn near half a Maine Lobster, packed in a little bun
19.50
Roasted Brussels Sprouts
Hazelnut cream, maple praline
6.00
The lobster was fresh and moist and the fried oysters were delicious. Our bartender/waiter was full of good conversation and tales of his travels. He even sent some bread back to the room for Duke to enjoy. I told him we would surely cross paths again one day!
Upon checkout the following morning we hesitantly left our wooden bungalow on the 4th floor, Duke in tow, and complimented the staff on their service. They left us with a smile and we will be sure to return with an even bigger smile from ear to ear. Thank you Denver.
